Glacier 2024 — Camping in the West

At 10 minutes from West Glacier, this campground was nearly unbeatable by location alone.

When Maggi’s grandma called and told us she was not feeling well and that we should postpone our trip, we decided to head into Montana, anyway. If she started feeling better soon, we would be halfway there. If not, we would have a few extra days at Glacier National Park.

I am immensely thankful that I did not have to set this up.

The stars came out shortly after we arrived, although the neighbors kept their headlights on for a very long time. The red comes from my headlamp, although some of the red on the tent might be a reflection of the neighbor’s headlights on my car.

This is one of the clearest times I have seen the Milky Way, and I could easily see it with the naked eye after about 30 minutes of adjusting to the darkness. There are a shocking number of satellite streaks these days.

The 5:30 am alarm was worth it for this sunrise light above McDonald Falls.

Darius decided to take matters into his own hands after I kept stopping to shoot.

I mean, come on. The waterfalls. The light. The color. Life on display!

Maggi wanted to check out the waterfall on the other side of this tunnel (almost to The Loop), and I loved the frame as she returned.

I turned around from the tunnel shot above and got this—possibly my favorite shot of the entire trip.

There are ducks in this photo at Red Rock Point, but look at the color of that water!

Just me holding Torin so he would not walk off the edge and into the river.

Maggi looks imaginatively across Lake McDonald.

Darius spends his time running up to me so I can select a rock for him to take into the lake for “washing.”

Torin also has rocks, but probably with less washing.

These rocks, specifically. A great number of them ended up in the water by the time we left. Everyone around us was doing the same. I would like to understand how that beach is maintained.

“Will somebody please get my stick?”

Torin has developed a habit of not wanting to be in a photo with the rest of us.

Indeed, Torin would not participate in our selfie with Esther and Olivia.

We were so thankful for the clear day. It was quite smokey just a couple of days prior to our arrival.

We made it to Logan Pass. We found a parking spot (after at least 20 minutes of driving in circles). We got most of the letters from this sign in the shot. We did not get attacked by bears.

Most importantly, Darius found these ground squirrels.

Not quite sunset here, but pretty decent light on the way back down to our campground.

And Darius had a chance to play in the tent before it was time to sleep.

We also discussed the above on episode 37 of Adventures with BAM.
